Chapter Fifteen

Lily was driving the third vehicle in the convoy which was a safe place to be. Since Wendy wasn’t military she rarely had to travel in the lead vehicle.

“We have a lot of daylight ahead of us which is a good thing because I don’t know what we’re going to find. The town has been bombed randomly and medical relief had to wait until it was safe to bring supplies,” Wendy said. She was all business when they had work to do and flirtation had to wait until they had downtime .

“I know you normally don’t wear a vest and helmet until we’re getting close to our destination. Is there a reason you’re geared up early this time?” Lily asked.

“I’m surprised you have to ask. Jaden wasn’t wearing his gear when his convoy was ambushed and it cost him his life. I’m not taking any chances and it was dumb to ever think I was invincible.”

“Sorry to bring up Jaden.”

“No, it’s better when we talk about a person when he or she dies. Bottling up emotions will cause a person to eventually explode. It’s worse if you pussy-foot around the topic because even if I cry, it’s cathartic.”

“Good advice. Are we still planning to stop in Badu and check on Adela?”

“Yeah because we’re going to have to stop somewhere. We don’t want to travel in the dark. ”

“Thanks, I haven’t been able to get the little girl out of my head.”

The run to the Western Region was different from Kabsad because it was an active war zone. The sound of mortar and gunfire in the distance was disconcerting and time was of the essence. Military medics at the sight were thankful for the simplest of supplies. Included in their supply dump were vaccines, syringes, bandages and antiseptic. Wounds that got infected resulted in the loss of a limb or death. Keeping the area clean was a simple fix to a potentially serious problem. Lily and Wendy left with the promise that they’d return soon. Then it was off to Badu and a visit to Adele.

They drove with other soldiers in the convoy who chose to stay on the outskirts of town until the break of dawn. Wendy and Lily didn’t announce their plans, even though they wouldn’t be breaking regulation. Wendy was in Afghanistan as a relief volunteer and she was dedicated to helping save lives regardless of who they were. Lily was regulated to be with Wendy and she was fine as long as she wasn’t in any way neglecting her duties as a member of the US military .

“Follow me Wendy. As far as villages in Afghanistan go, this one’s charming; don’t you agree?”

“I guess that depends on your definition of charming. So far I don’t see sniper fire and I’m not hearing bombs but it’s just a matter of time.”

“So negative, Wendy. We’re going to have to do something about that. Do you know why you fail to see the brighter side of life.”

Wendy chuckled and
